CCVFD Historical Note #5

June 8, 1922

The Committee appointed to solicit subscriptions for the purchase of an adequate fire department for Culpeper is meeting with fairly good success.  The committee is composed of Messrs. L. Frank Smith, J. Wayman Johnson, T. Q. Thompson, D. J. Hill, R. W. Hoffman and John W. Yowell.  The members of the Committee urgently request any citizen that has not been called upon, to look up some member of the Committee and put his name down for a subscription, no matter what the amount might be.

This is an important matter, and one that every property holder is vitally interested in.

June 22, 1922

If you feel interested in having a well-equipped firefighting apparatus for the protection of your property, your home and your children, call on some member of the Committee and put your name down on the list for a subscription, no matter what the amount is — small or large.

Our first fire engine was a 1923 American LaFrance Brockway “Torpedo”. This was a combination hose & chemical pumper.  CCVFD received delivery in December 1923. The Department paid $5,000.00 for the pumper.  This unit stayed in service in Culpeper until January 1939.  It was sold to Washington V.F.D. in Rappahannock County for $300.00.

From Washington V.F.D. the unit went to antique dealer in Luray, Va. who sold it to Mr. James Lesnick in 1983.  CCVFD bought the unit from Mr. Lesnick in 1996.

The American La France Brockway “Torpedo has been completely restored and sits proudly in our station (see photo below).  Stop in and see it.
